At The Apartment design showroom in Prague’s Karlín, six chairs just got a second life. Mikuláš selected them from Moje Poesie, a collector’s vintage shop — each one representing a different era and philosophy of design. And each one got its own knitted piece: a different technique, a different stitch, different materials, a different graphic language.
“I wanted a reference that would loosely sit somewhere in the 1970s. What came to mind was an imaginary conversation between Helen Frankenthaler and Ludmila Padrtová — two artists defined by colour and landscape. I interpreted their abstract landscapes freely into knitting patterns, then added the precise, sharp graphic vocabulary of the decade, which contrasts beautifully with the soft, almost blurred quality of the landscapes. Their work also shaped my colour choices,” says Mikuláš.
The series combines natural fibres — merino wool, linen and silk — with contrasting synthetics: shimmering lurex, viscose, polyamide. “In form and colour, I always start with the chair itself. Every piece is designed around its shape — made to fit exactly,” he explains.
A shell armchair got an abstract sweater curling around the corner of its backrest. A classic waiting-room chair was wrapped in a quilted cover with a landscape in muted tones. A brown wooden stool found a new personality in a multicoloured vest. A folding stool with a plexiglass seat received a warm, ruffled cape. A pale round-seated stool went full Studio 54 — fringes, graphic upholstery, the works. And Mackintosh’s iconic Hill House 1 got a mourning veil, knitted without a single seam.
